Activities
Kintyre has a unique timeless quality and never a dull day when it comes to things to see and do!
Golf
Machrihanish Golf Club with its renowned 1st hole described by Jack Nicklaus as “the world’s greatest opening hole “ and the new Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club are just two miles from the cottage with another fine course at Dunaverty, 10 miles away. Kintyre has five courses in total.
Walkers
Stroll the beaches, explore the local hills, or tackle part of the waymarked Kintyre Way. There are several walking and cycling routes on Beinn Ghuilean (352m) or try Campbeltown’s town trails. Walk out to the famous cave painting on Davaar Island but do check the tides first!
Watersports
Sailboarding, surfing and kitesurfing are all popular on Machrihanish beach and instruction and kit can be hired in town. Local boats offer wildlife trips to Sanda and the Mull of Kintyre plus loch and sea angling or you could stroll to the pier to fish, admire the yachts or simply watch the local fishing boats land their catch.
Wildlife
The area is rich in birdlife with a small seabird and wildlife observatory hut at Machrihanish. Seals are common while dolphin, whales and otters are sometimes spotted too. Look for deer and wild goats.
Other activities
For historians there are many ancient sites to visit. For a duller day, there is the Campbeltown leisure centre with its swimming pool, gym and library, a whisky tour, or a visit to Campbeltown’s unique cinema. The Kintyre peninsula runs two festivals – Mokfest, the Mull of Kintyre Music Festival, and Mokrun, a 10k and half marathon.
Farther afield, a trip to peaceful Gigha to enjoy its famous gardens or white sands makes a
wonderful day out. Bikes can be hired there too. Glenbarr Abbey, Saddell Abbey and Carradale
are all worth a visit if you have time.
